field Study Site - Zomba Plateau

coffee berriesIn March 2015 ABC started working with Satemwa Tea and Coffee estate to survey bats in their coffee, tea and riverine forest areas.

Satemwa Tea and Coffee estate is based in the Southern Shire Highlands area of Malawi. They have been growning tea since 1923 and coffee since 1971.

All of their coffee is grown at an altitude of 900 - 1,000m above sea level. Interspersed between the coffee fields are riverine forest areas. These areas play an important role in the protection of indigenous flora and flora in the Southern Highlands of Malawi where population pressure has decimated all but a few isolated pockets.

The research at Satemwa aims to quantify the value bats provide to the agricultural industry through pest control, and soon this experiment will be rolled out to other crops grown in the Liwonde region.
